Fascism in the United States

More and more people are saying things like "The United States is on the road to fascism!" At first glance, this seems to be an absurd statement - this nation ... fascist? Well, except for the courage of one US Army general, Smedley Butler, the Morgan and Mellon banking interests would have staged a successful fascist coup against Franklin Roosevelt. They haven't given up banking since then; do you think they've given up their other objectives, either?

Read this list of 14 characteristics of fascism, taken from the article "Fascism Anyone?" by Laurence W. Britt in Free Inquiry Magazine, and then decide:

  1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism
  2. Disdain for the importance of human rights
  3. Identification of enemies and /scapegoats as a unifying cause
  4. The supremacy of the military and avid militarism
  5. Rampant sexism
  6. A controlled mass media
  7. Obsession with national security
  8. Religion and ruling elite tied together
  9. Power of corporations protected
  10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated
  11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts
  12. Obsession with crime and punishment
  13. Rampant cronyism and corruption
  14. Fraudulent elections

What do you think?
And, even more importantly, what are you going to do about it?
